『사우스 라이딩』 영문판.
1936년에 출간된 위니프레드 홀트비의 장편소설.
1930년대 초반, 고향 사우스 라이딩(South Riding)의 여학교 교장으로 부임하여 신교육(新敎育) 방식을 도입하려는 주인공 사라 버튼(Sarah Burton)을 통해 요크셔(Yorkshire) 지역의 삶과 사회 문제 등을 조명하고 있다. 2011년 BBC에서 동명 드라마로 제작되었다.

위니프레드 홀트비 (Winifred Holtby)
1898~1935. 영국의 소설가, 저널리스트, 페미니스트, 평화주의자. 이스트라이딩오브요크셔(East Riding of Yorkshire) 출생.
옥스퍼드대학에서 공부했다. 사후에 출판된 걸작 『사우스 라이딩 South Riding』(1936)으로 유명하다. 주요 저서에 『Anderby Wold』(1923) 『The Crowded Street』(1924) 『The Land of Green Ginger』(1927) 『A New Voter's Guide to Party Programmes』(1929) 『Virginia Woolf: a Critical Memoir』(1932) 『Women and a Changing Civilisation』(1934) 등이 있다.
